Who our Fredericksburg tax preparation service is for
Most of our clients live or work in the Fredericksburg region, from Spotsylvania and Stafford to King George and Caroline. Their tax situations are as varied as the area itself.
Individuals and families
- W-2 employees, including federal workers and contractors who commute to Northern Virginia or DC.
- Self-employed and gig workers who receive 1099s and need help with business expenses, mileage and estimated taxes.
- Landlords with one or more rental properties.
- Military families stationed near Quantico, Dahlgren or Fort A.P. Hill, including households where the service member keeps a home-of-record in another state.
- Retirees with Social Security, pensions, IRA withdrawals or investment income.
- Multi-state filers, such as people who moved into or out of Virginia during the year or earn income in another state.
Small businesses
We prepare returns for sole proprietors filing Schedule C, and we work with partnerships and S corporations on their business returns and the owners' personal returns. If your books need attention before tax time, our bookkeeping service can get them ready first.

Have a question about your situation?
Our team can look at your numbers and tell you exactly where you stand — in person in Fredericksburg or remotely from anywhere.
What to bring to your appointment
A complete set of documents is the single biggest factor in an accurate return. Here is the short version; our full tax document checklist covers every situation, from childcare costs to crypto.
Missing a form? Bring what you have. We will tell you exactly what is still needed, and you can upload it through the portal later.
Federal and Virginia returns, filed together
We prepare your federal Form 1040 and your Virginia return at the same time, so the numbers match and nothing is entered twice. For tax year 2026, federal returns are due Thursday, April 15, 2027. Virginia's deadline is normally May 1, but May 1, 2027 is a Saturday, and Virginia Tax moves weekend due dates to the next business day, which makes it Monday, May 3, 2027.
A few Virginia situations come up often in the Fredericksburg area:
- Moving in or out of Virginia. A mid-year move usually means a part-year resident return, with income split between states.
- Working in Maryland or DC. Virginia residents who commute to a job in Maryland or DC generally pay income tax on those wages to Virginia, not the work location, thanks to reciprocity rules and DC's treatment of nonresidents. The details matter, and so does the withholding form you give your employer.
- Military households. Residency rules for service members and spouses can change which state taxes your pay. Our military tax guide for Virginia explains the basics.

Prior-year, unfiled and amended returns
Life happens, and sometimes a return does not get filed or gets filed with a mistake. We can help with both.
- Unfiled returns. If you are owed a refund, the IRS says you generally must file within 3 years of the return due date to claim it. If you owe, filing sooner limits penalties and interest, and it is better than letting the IRS prepare a substitute return that may not include deductions you are entitled to.
- Amended returns. To claim an additional refund, the IRS generally requires Form 1040-X within 3 years after you filed the original return or 2 years after you paid the tax, whichever is later. Recent years can be amended electronically.
- Virginia follow-up. When your federal return changes, Virginia generally expects an amended Virginia return within one year of the final federal change.
If the IRS has already sent letters or a bill, our tax resolution service can help you respond while we get the missing returns filed.

Frequently asked questions
How much does tax preparation cost?
Every return is different, so the fee depends on the forms and schedules your situation needs. Call us at (540) 479-1500 or book an appointment and we will talk through your situation before any work begins.
Do I have to come into the office?
No. Many clients meet with us at our Harrison Road office in Fredericksburg, but you can also send documents through our secure client portal and handle questions by phone or email.
Will you prepare my Virginia return too?
Yes. If you are a Virginia resident, part-year resident or have Virginia-source income, we prepare and e-file your Virginia return along with your federal return.
When are 2026 tax returns due?
Federal returns for tax year 2026 are due Thursday, April 15, 2027. Virginia's usual May 1 deadline falls on a Saturday in 2027, so under Virginia Tax's weekend rule the return is due the next business day, Monday, May 3, 2027.
Can you fix a mistake on a return I already filed?
Yes. We can review the original return and, if a change is needed, prepare an amended federal return (Form 1040-X) and the matching amended Virginia return.
