Who uses our notary services

Our notary clients come from all over the Fredericksburg region — the city, Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George and Caroline counties:

  • Families signing powers of attorney, advance medical directives prepared by their attorney, or affidavits for a family matter.
  • Parents who need a consent letter for a child traveling abroad with one parent or a relative.
  • Military families near Quantico, Dahlgren and Fort A.P. Hill handling paperwork before a PCS move or deployment.
  • Buyers and sellers with deeds, vehicle titles and DMV or out-of-state forms.
  • Small businesses needing notarized vendor forms, affidavits or certified copies of business documents.
  • Employers and remote hires who need Form I-9 completed by an authorized representative (a separate service, since I-9s aren't notarized).

What's included

  • Acknowledgments — confirming your identity and that you signed willingly (deeds, powers of attorney, titles).
  • Jurats, oaths and affirmations — for affidavits and other sworn statements.
  • Copy certifications — certifying a true copy of an original you bring (not available for birth, death or marriage certificates or court records).
  • Identity verification against the IDs Virginia accepts, or by credible witnesses when the law allows.
  • A complete Virginia certificate, including the notarial statement, date, location, signature, registration number, commission expiration and seal.
  • A journal record of each notarization, as Virginia requires of every notary starting July 1, 2026.

How a notary appointment works

  1. Book a time. Use our online scheduler or call. Tell us roughly what you're signing and how many signers there are.
  2. Prepare your document. Fill in every blank (or write "N/A"), and ask the requesting party which notarial act they need if the certificate wording isn't printed on the page.
  3. Arrive with ID. Every signer must appear in person with acceptable, unexpired ID.
  4. Review and sign. We check the document for completeness and verify each signer's identity. If needed, we administer the oath, and you sign.
  5. Certificate and seal. We complete the certificate, sign, apply our seal, record the act in our journal, and hand the document back to you.

What to bring

  • Unexpired government photo ID for each signer — Virginia accepts a state driver's license or ID card, U.S. passport or passport card, U.S. military ID, green card, foreign passport, or a certificate of citizenship or naturalization with your photo and signature.
  • The complete document, every page, with no blank spaces.
  • All signers, in person. One spouse can't sign for the other.
  • Your own witnesses, with ID, if the document has witness lines.
  • The original, if you need a certified copy.
  • Any instructions from the agency, court, lender or foreign office that asked for the notarization.

What a notary can't do

Virginia law draws firm lines around the notary's role, and we follow them carefully:

  • We can't give legal advice, prepare legal documents, or choose the type of notarization for you.
  • We can't notarize a document with blank spaces, or for a signer who isn't present.
  • We can't certify copies of birth, death or marriage certificates or court documents. Those come from Vital Records or the court.
  • We may decline if we can't be satisfied about a signer's identity or willingness to sign.

These rules protect you. A notarization done by the book is one the bank, court, county clerk or foreign government will accept.

Frequently asked questions

What ID do I need for a notary in Virginia?

An unexpired government photo ID with your signature, such as a state driver's license or ID card, U.S. passport or passport card, U.S. military ID, green card, or foreign passport. Each signer needs their own ID.

How much does a notary cost in Virginia?

Virginia law caps notary fees at $10 per notarial act for paper documents and $25 per electronic notarial act. Call us at (540) 479-1500 for our current pricing for your documents.

Can you tell me what kind of notarization I need?

No. Virginia notaries who aren't attorneys can't choose the notarial certificate or explain your document. Ask the agency, attorney or company that asked for the notarization whether they need an acknowledgment, jurat or copy certification.

Should I sign my document before I come in?

Usually it's best to wait. Some notarizations, such as jurats, require you to sign in front of the notary after taking an oath. Bring the document unsigned unless you've been told otherwise.

What are your notary hours?

Notary services are available Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at 4608 Harrison Road in Fredericksburg. For loan signings or special requests, contact us to arrange a convenient time.
