How this Virginia income tax calculator works

This calculator estimates your 2026 Virginia income tax — the Form 760 you will file in spring 2027 — for a full-year Virginia resident. It follows the order of the return:

  1. Start with federal adjusted gross income. Virginia begins where your federal return's AGI leaves off, then adds any Virginia additions.
  2. Subtract what Virginia doesn't tax. Taxable Social Security benefits come off in full. Military retirement and Survivor Benefit Plan income comes off up to $40,000 per person. Active-duty basic pay can earn up to a $15,000 subtraction, and the age deduction (below) applies if you or your spouse are 65 or older. The result is Virginia adjusted gross income (VAGI).
  3. Subtract your deduction and exemptions. You take the Virginia standard deduction unless you itemized on your federal return, in which case you must itemize for Virginia too. Exemptions are $930 per person and dependent, plus $800 for each person who is 65 or older or blind.
  4. Apply Virginia's four rates. 2% on the first $3,000 of taxable income, 3% up to $5,000, 5% up to $17,000 and 5.75% on everything above that.
  5. Compare with what you've paid. Virginia withholding (W-2 box 17) and any 760ES estimated payments, minus your tax, gives your estimated refund or balance due.

If your VAGI is below the filing threshold ($11,950 single or married filing separately, $23,900 married filing jointly), Virginia tax is $0 and you can file to get back anything withheld.

The age deduction

For 2026, anyone age 65 or older on January 1, 2027 (born on or before January 1, 1962) may get an age deduction of up to $12,000. If you were born on or before January 1, 1939, you get the full $12,000 regardless of income. Everyone else has the deduction reduced by $1 for each $1 of "adjusted federal AGI" above $50,000 if single, or $75,000 for married couples. Adjusted federal AGI is your federal AGI minus taxable Social Security. Married couples always use their combined income, even when they file separately; if both spouses qualify, the joint deduction is figured first and split in half.

Notes for military families and retirees

Fredericksburg sits between Quantico, Dahlgren and Fort A.P. Hill, so the military subtractions come up constantly in our office. Two rules trip people up. First, the $15,000 basic pay subtraction is only for basic pay while on extended active duty for more than 90 days, and it disappears completely once basic pay reaches $30,000. Second, Virginia does not allow the same dollars to be used for two military subtractions. Our military tax guide for Virginia covers residency, spouses and combat pay.

Retirees often see the biggest gap between federal and Virginia tax: Social Security is fully subtracted, and the age deduction can remove another $12,000 per person at moderate incomes. See our guide to retirement taxes in Virginia for pensions, IRAs and RMDs.

What this estimate leaves out

  • The Spouse Tax Adjustment. Two-income married couples filing jointly can reduce their tax by up to $259. It needs each spouse's separate income, so it is not included here.
  • The overall limit on itemized deductions. Virginia still applies the old "Pease" limitation. For 2025 it started at federal AGI over $332,700 single, $365,950 head of household, $399,200 joint and $199,600 married filing separately; 2026 thresholds have not been published yet. The calculator flags you if you itemize above those amounts but does not reduce your deduction.
  • Credits. The refundable Virginia earned income credit, the credit for low-income individuals, the credit for tax paid to another state and Schedule CR credits are not included.
  • Other adjustments. The child and dependent care deduction, disability income subtraction, conformity adjustments, and part-year or nonresident returns (Forms 760PY and 763) are not modeled. Married couples filing separately should note that the age deduction uses combined income.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Virginia standard deduction for 2026?

For tax year 2026 the Virginia standard deduction is $8,750 for single filers (including head of household and each spouse filing separately) and $17,500 for married couples filing jointly. It rises to $9,200 and $18,400 for 2027.

Does Virginia tax Social Security benefits?

No. Virginia lets you subtract the Social Security and Tier 1 Railroad Retirement benefits that were included in your federal adjusted gross income, so they are not taxed by Virginia.

How much military retirement can I subtract in Virginia for 2026?

Up to $40,000 of military retirement and certain survivor benefits per qualifying person, under Va. Code § 58.1-322.02. A bill to remove the cap for 2026 did not become law. The same income cannot also be used for another military subtraction.

Who qualifies for the Virginia age deduction in 2026?

Taxpayers age 65 or older on January 1, 2027 (born on or before January 1, 1962). People born on or before January 1, 1939 get the full $12,000; everyone else has the $12,000 reduced dollar for dollar once income, minus taxable Social Security, passes $50,000 (single) or $75,000 (married).
