Tax Preparation for King George County, VA Residents & Businesses

Timeless Tax & Accounting provides tax preparation for King George County, VA residents and businesses, including Navy families, civilian employees and defense contractors connected to Naval Support Facility Dahlgren. We prepare your federal and Virginia returns. This page covers King George's own local taxes, which changed in several ways recently: proration, the end of the vehicle license fee, and a meals tax update effective July 1, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • King George no longer mails January declaration forms; you must report vehicle changes to the DMV and the Commissioner within 30 days.
  • Failing to register a vehicle within 30 days can bring a $250 fine per vehicle.
  • Personal property bills are due June 5 and December 5, and since 2024 the county prorates and no longer charges a vehicle license fee.
  • Non-Virginia military members send an LES dated January 1 by February 15; businesses grossing over $2,500 renew licenses by March 1.

Who handles which tax in King George

King George's local tax offices share the county building at 10459 Courthouse Drive in King George:

  • Commissioner of the Revenue (Suite 101, (540) 775-4664) assesses real estate, personal property and business taxes; issues business licenses; collects meals, business license and transient occupancy taxes; handles land use and the exemptions for elderly, disabled and disabled veteran homeowners; and processes and audits state income tax returns and estimated payments. It also issues the stickers for the county's Sealston and Purkins' Corner convenience centers.
  • Treasurer (Suite 100) receives payments, including monthly meals tax remittances, by drop box, mail, in person or online.

If a value or vehicle on your bill looks wrong, start with the Commissioner. For payments, go to the Treasurer.

King George car tax: what changed and what to do

A vehicle is taxable in King George if it is normally garaged or parked in the county, even if it is registered in another state. Vehicles are valued at clean trade-in value from the NADA used car guide published in January of the tax year. The county splits the bill into two payments due June 5 and December 5.

No more January form, and a 30-day rule with a fine

The Commissioner's office no longer mails declaration forms to existing residents each January. Instead, you must notify both the Virginia DMV and the Commissioner within 30 days when you register a vehicle, change your address, or buy or dispose of a vehicle. The county states that failing to register a vehicle after the 30 days results in a $250 fine per vehicle. New Virginia residents also have 30 days to title and register with the DMV.

Proration and the repealed license fee

Since January 1, 2024, King George prorates personal property tax on motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, so you pay only for the months you owned the vehicle and lived in the county. Proration appears on the regular June and December bills. The same year, the county repealed its annual vehicle license fee, which had been $23 for passenger vehicles.

Car tax relief

Personal property tax relief applies to passenger cars, motorcycles, pickups and panel trucks under 10,001 pounds owned or leased by an individual and not used for business. Your bill is reduced by that year's relief percentage on the first $20,000 of NADA value. For tax year 2025 the county set the percentage at 24%; it is set each year, so check your bill for 2026. High-mileage vehicles may qualify for a discount; ask the Commissioner's office what documentation it needs.

Dahlgren military families and disabled veterans

Active-duty residents of King George whose legal residence is outside Virginia can be exempt from county car tax under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. The county's requirement is specific: submit your Leave and Earnings Statement dated January 1 of the tax year to the Commissioner by February 15. If the vehicle is titled or registered with your spouse, add a copy of their military ID, front and back. For a leased vehicle, include a copy of the registration. You can mail, fax, email or drop off the documents.

Veterans rated 100% service-connected, permanent and total can exempt one personal-use car, pickup or panel truck that they own (or co-own with a spouse) and regularly use; leased vehicles do not qualify. The vehicle exemption applies from the later of the purchase date or January 1, 2021, and ends at the veteran's death. A separate state exemption covers the veteran's home and up to one acre, and it can continue for a surviving spouse who does not remarry. Apply through the Commissioner with your VA rating letter.

Dahlgren households also include many civilian federal employees and contractors. Our military tax guide and federal employee tax guide cover the income tax side, from spouse residency to TSP.

King George business taxes

King George does have a business license (BPOL) tax, with a low threshold. Businesses in the county that gross more than $2,500 a year need a county business license. Licenses are annual, and renewals must be filed and paid by March 1. Contractors must also submit a valid state contractor's license and a workers' compensation certificate each year, restaurants need a meals tax account and health permit, and hotels need a transient occupancy account.

  • Business personal property: equipment in the county on January 1 must be reported on the county's own form by February 15, with an itemized list. "Same as last year" is not accepted. On the 2026 form, equipment bought in 2025 is assessed at 30% of cost, stepping down to 10% for 2021 and earlier.
  • Meals tax: as of July 1, 2026, restaurants and other sellers of prepared food collect a 6% county meals tax and remit it by the 20th of each month for the prior month, using the new online form for taxes collected after July 1.
